Ravi Shankar Lights Up Woodstock

In America, Ravi Shankar was solely responsible for popularizing the sitar and traditional Indian raga. The crowd and other musical performances warmly welcomed his appearance at Woodstock as a global superstar. Maya Kulkarni, who is playing the tambourine, and Alla Rakha, who is playing the tabla, were Shankar’s backup musicians.

The three performed a 42-minute set while sitting cross-legged on an elevated platform covered in carpet. While Shankar was content to play in the rain, he wasn’t thrilled about the connection between his music and narcotics. Nevertheless, a live performance album was made available for his fans the following year.
