Woodstock Festival Photos from 1969: From Eccentric Spectators to Spellbinding Performances from Iconic Singers

Melanie Safka, First Lady Of Woodstock

Melanie Safka had an incredible time at Woodstock. She had never performed in front of a crowd that size before, and it was still early in her career, so she must have been a little anxious about being so “visible.”

Although it is impossible to tell from this photograph, it was raining cats and dogs when she took the stage that evening in 1969. She sang “Momma Momma,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” and “Close to It All.” And the rain only enhanced the audience’s response to her brief but heartfelt performance. You now see why she is referred to as the First Lady of Woodstock.
