Some of the musicians who took the stage at Woodstock had already made a name for themselves as prominent singers. But for newly formed bands like Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, it was an opportunity to establish their reputations. Their first gig was at a Chicago theatre; the following day, they set out for Woodstock.

The men were anxious wrecks by the time they reached the stage, as you might anticipate from a brand-new band. Their anxiety was more because better-known musicians surrounded them than because of the crowd. They could have overcome their nerves much faster if they had foreseen the enthusiastic response from the audience.
