Sochi was well-known for its fabulous beaches and mild temperatures in the ’60s. With more than 500,000 tourists stopping by each year to enjoy the sun and take a swim in the water, it became a well-liked tourist destination. This image demonstrates how crowded it could get, with what appears to be people heaped on top of one another.

Evidently, the sand is scarcely visible. Sochi hosted the major Soviet Union hospital during World War II, which the Germans were barred from. The subsequent twenty years saw the city quadruple its population and meet the needs of its people.
