Fece scalpore nel 1996 l’incoronazione di una Miss Italia di colore: Denny Mendez infatti fu la prima e unica Miss non italiana ad essersi aggiudicata il più famoso concorso di bellezza italiano. I giornali scandalistici dell’epoca parlavano solo di questo e in televisione ci furono accese polemiche su un argomento sul quale evidentemente il Belpaese non era ancora pronto culturalmente ad accettare. Poco importa perché da quel momento la Mendez diventò popolarissima come modella e come attrice. Attualmente la Mendes vive a Beverly Hills ed è una produttrice cinematografica, ha avuto una figlia, India Nayara, dal suo attuale compagno Oscar Generale.
