He was such an exemplary leader and politician that in 2011, the then president of the United States, Barack Obama awarded John Lewis a presidential Medal of Freedom. This came as such an honor for the gentleman who served as the third chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee that marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. protesting discrimination.
