José Luis es productor, crítico, presentador de televisión, autor literario, guionista y director de cine. Descubrió su pasión por el cine a sus 5 años tras ver un fragmento de la película Lo que el viento se llevó. Su pasión lo volvió un magnífico experto. Debutó en el cine en 1979 como director con Háblame de Rita.
Ganó un Premio Óscar a la Mejor película de no habla inglesa por Volver a empezar. Su éxito y fama no lo han alejado de sus orígenes. Sigue escribiendo sus espectaculares guiones a mano y a veces con máquina de escribir, como en los viejos tiempos. Esto es parte de su magia.
