In 1997 werd de wens van Carice van Houten om actrice te worden wel heel concreet, want ze kreeg de hoofdrol in de film Het Labyrinth aangeboden en leverde een uitmuntende prestatie. Er volgden nog heel wat films, waarvan onder andere Suzy Q, Minoes en Zwartboek haar een Gouden Kalf opleverden. Ondertussen is ze ook internationaal bekend geworden, door haar vertolking van het personage Melisandre in Game of Thrones. Alhoewel ze een ruime keuze heeft aan nieuwe opdrachten, keerde ze toch naar Nederland terug om het wat rustiger aan te doen en geniet met haar partner Guy Pearce en een bankrekening met vijf miljoen euro volop van het gezinsleven.
