Sonny Liston, 1967

Sonny Liston was a strong contender during his run from 1953 to 1970 after he defeated Floyd Patterson in 1962 and became the heavyweight champion defending the title against Patterson twice in a row. The boxer is still considered an intimidating fighter for his long reach, toughness, and punching power.

His seemingly unbreakable streak was broken when the boxer fought Cassius Clay. Muhammed Ali hadn’t changed his name by then, and in 1964 when Clay came in as an underdog. Many questioned whether the re-match between the two a year later was fixed as Liston was surprisingly knocked out after the first round.
