Mark Spitz, 1975

Nine-time Olympic Champion Mark Spitz is well known as a competitive swimmer. He stood out in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich for winning seven gold medals and all within record time too. He held that title until Michael Phelps won eight golds at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

In a CNN interview in July 2021, Spitz mentioned that “records are made to be broken,” when referring to Phelps. The swimmer retired at 22 shortly after his incredible performance at the Munich Olympics and directed his interests to show business while he was still a household success.
