Mario Lemieux, 1984

Canadian Mario Lemieux played for 17 seasons of professional hockey with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1984 to 2006, where he assumed ownership in 1999 after the team declared bankruptcy in 1998. ‘Super Mario,’ swooped in and made an unusual offer to fund the Penguins. After years of deferred salaries, he converted it into equity. 

It was announced in the media in December 2021, the NHL’s Board of Governors approved the sale of the Penguins to Fenway Sports Group for $900 million. Although they will gain “controlling interest,” Lemieux will still be part of the ownership group.
