Paul (Bear) Bryant, 1979

Paul’ Bear’ Bryant was best known for being the head coach of the University of Alabama football team. During his 25-year reign, he collected six National Championships and 13 Conference Championships. Before retiring in 1982, he held a record-breaking 323 win in college football.

Most are familiar with his trademark white houndstooth hat and deep voice. Interestingly his nickname ‘Bear’ was given to him when he was offered $1 from a circus promotor to wrestle a bear, which he agreed to; however, he didn’t pay up, and the bear ended up biting Bryant’s ear.
