The Enigmatic Egyptian Great Sphinx in 1850

Even if we tried, we couldn’t take our eyes off this breathtaking image of The Great Sphinx. Over the years, the monument has been one of Egypt’s largest statues and top tourist destinations. The mythological appearance of the human head on the lion’s body captivated a lot of people. It portrayed the visage of Pharoah Khafre, the 4th dynasty’s legendary ruler.

Limestone, a carbonite sedimentary rock, was used to sculpt the 239-foot-long sculpture. Archaeologists estimate that the monument was probably built around 2,500 BC. The enormous and historical figure was apparently erected to watch over the Khafre pyramid at Giza.
