Eerie Pictures Captured Throughout History That Will Take Your Breath Away

The Montmartre Stairs in 1936

The Stairs of Montmartre is a fascinating work by Jules Halasz, a French artist of Hungarian descent who’s also referred to as “Brassai.” The picture above was captured atop the stairs leading to Rue Foyatier. This specific street bore the name of renowned artist Denis Foyatier and was commissioned in 1897.

Brassai’s passion for his French city is evident in his artistic talent and work. He would wander the streets at night, photographing events and people going about their daily lives. His artwork has evolved into an enduring representation of Paris. This collection is on display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
