Neff war inzwischen ein vertrauter Freund von Anna, weshalb die Hotelleitung ihn bat, sich um die Angelegenheit zu kümmern, in der Hoffnung, dass das Mädchen die 30.000 Dollar Schulden begleichen würde. Aber Neff war sich sicher, dass Anna nichts Unrechtes tat und dass sie das Geld wirklich hatte. Also ging er hoffnungsvoll zu dem Mädchen, um sie direkt anzusprechen, aber Anna sagte nicht das, was er sich erhoffte.
Sie hatte das Geld immer noch nicht, aber sie versicherte ihm, dass die Überweisung getätigt worden war. Ob das nun stimmte oder nicht, war eine andere Frage, aber von diesem Moment an wusste Neff, dass seine Freundin eine Lügnerin war, und er war sich nicht einmal sicher, ob sie wirklich seine Freundin war.
