Der ehemalige Fußballer wurde vor allem durch sein Golden Goal bei der Fußball EM 1996 zum Fanliebling, in dem er Deutschland zum Europameister schoss. Als Direktor steht er aktuell mit einem Vertrag bis 2024 beim DFB unter Vertrag und sein Gehalt soll sich bei rund 1,5 Millionen Euro belaufen. Kein Wunder, dass er bis heute ein Vermögen von geschätzten 71 Millionen Euro ansammeln konnte. Damit kann er sich sein Anwesen in Berg am Starnberger See auch sicher leisten. Dort lebt er mit seiner Frau Klara Szalantzy und der gemeinsamen Tochter. In der Gemeinde haben sie auch viele bekannte Nachbarn. Neben ihm sollen auch seine Fußballer-Kollegen Jens Lehmann und Michael Ballack in der Gemeinde leben.
