The coronation of a black Miss Italy caused a sensation in 1996: Denny Mendez was in fact the first and only non-Italian Miss to have won the most famous Italian beauty contest. The tabloids of the time only talked about this and on television there were heated controversies on a topic that evidently the Bel Paese was not yet culturally ready to accept. It matters little because from that moment on Mendez became very popular as a model and actress. Currently Mendes lives in Beverly Hills and is a film producer, she has a daughter, India Nayara, with her current partner Oscar Generale.
