Switching to a vegan diet doesn’t just improve health. It also cuts grocery bills. A new study published in JAMA Network Open confirms that eliminating meat and dairy saves money while enhancing overall well-being.

Researchers at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine conducted a 16-week experiment comparing three diets: The standard American diet, the Mediterranean diet, and a low-fat vegan diet.

The findings show that veganism is the healthiest option and the most affordable.

Veganism Saves You Money, the Study Finds

A vegan diet reduces food costs by 19%, which amounts to about $1.80 per day, compared to a standard American diet filled with meat, dairy, and processed foods. Over a year, this translates to nearly $900 in savings. The reduction in costs primarily comes from eliminating expensive animal products.

This outweighs the slightly higher spending on vegetables, grains, and plant-based proteins.

On the other hand, the Mediterranean diet—which is also considered healthy—costs more than the standard American diet, increasing daily expenses by about 60 cents. Those who switch from a Mediterranean diet to a vegan one can save even more: around $2.40 per day, or approximately $870 per year.

Vegan Diet Improves Your Health

The financial benefits are clear, but the health improvements are even more impressive. The study finds that a vegan diet leads to better weight management, lower cholesterol, improved insulin sensitivity, and healthier body composition compared to a Mediterranean diet.

The nutrient-dense foods in a plant-based diet naturally help regulate weight, improve digestion, and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

A low-fat vegan diet primarily consists of whole foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains, which contribute to overall better health. Researchers conclude that plant-based eating supports metabolic health, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight and avoid lifestyle-related illnesses.

Health experts explain that choosing a vegan diet is not just about cutting costs. It is about preventing future medical expenses. Long-term health improvements reduce the risk of expensive treatments, hospital visits, and medications, reinforcing that veganism is a smart investment in personal well-being.

Veganism Can Make You Biologically Younger

Eating plant-based doesn’t just improve health. It may also slow down aging. Another recent study shows that following a vegan diet for eight weeks significantly reduces biological age. Scientists conducted a trial of 21 pairs of identical twins.

They found that those who ate only plant-based foods for two months had noticeable improvements in their biological age compared to their meat-eating siblings.

By sticking to a vegan lifestyle, people can not only feel younger but also reduce the risk of age-related diseases. The research indicates that even a short commitment to vegan eating can yield significant health benefits. This makes it a compelling choice for those looking to maintain long-term wellness.

With grocery prices soaring and health concerns increasing, switching to a vegan diet is one of the easiest ways to save money and improve well-being. The savings alone are substantial. Nearly $900 per year that can go toward other financial goals. More importantly, the health advantages are undeniable, reducing the likelihood of expensive medical bills and chronic illnesses.
